Free help for leaseholders
You don't have to navigate this alone. These organisations offer free advice and support.
LEASE - Leasehold Advisory Service
Free legal advice from qualified advisers on all aspects of residential leasehold law. Offers 15-minute telephone appointments, written guides, and a free e-learning course specifically for RTM company directors.
Leasehold Knowledge Partnership
Free advice and detailed guides on RTM, service charges and tribunal disputes. LKP is the secretariat of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on leasehold reform. Particularly useful if your landlord contests your claim.
National Leasehold Campaign
The largest leaseholder community in England and Wales. Connect with leaseholders who have been through RTM and get peer support and lived experience.
Federation of Private Residents' Associations (FPRA)
Legally qualified advisers review your specific lease and provide detailed tactical guidance. Particularly valuable after RTM for ongoing director support - advises members but cannot act for them.
Shelter
Detailed free online guidance on RTM eligibility, the claim process and what happens if your landlord disputes your claim - updated for the 2024 reforms.
Citizens Advice
Free general housing and leasehold advice available in person, by phone, and online. Good for initial questions about your rights before starting the RTM process.
When do I need a solicitor?
Most RTM claims do not require a solicitor. You should consider instructing one if:
- Your building is complex - mixed use, multiple freeholders or unusual lease terms
- Your landlord serves a counter-notice disputing your claim
- Your case goes to the First-tier Tribunal
In all other cases, LEASE, LKP and YourBuilding cover everything you need.
